(*) Hun Sen has backed down. On July 3 he ordered Cambodian embassies worldwide to deny entry visas to the six Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who have pledged to accompany Sam Rainsy when he returns to Cambodia in the near future after four years of forced exile.

This was followed on July 15 by an instruction note from Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon to all Cambodian ambassadors and consuls to effectively deny entry visa to the six MEPs, whose names and photos are attached to the note.

The climbdown came down on July 18 when the Hun Sen regime denied it has ever blacklisted the six MEPs. The regime dismissed a media report claiming Cambodia has placed six MEPs on a blacklist as “completely fake news.”

The about-turn follows a petition organised by Liberal International in solidarity with the six MEPs and increasing international pressure to restore democracy in Cambodia. It represents a major victory for all democrats worldwide.

This is what Hun Sen says in the video:

“There are six Members of [the European] Parliament who reportedly would accompany someone [Sam Rainsy] going back to Cambodia. I want to specify that any Cambodian citizens have the right to enter Cambodia. Nobody can prevent them from doing so. They can come any time. But for foreigners, normally they have to ask for a visa. But if I don’t give it to you, you’d better not come [threatening tone], try to do it and you will see what would happen to you. Let those Members of Parliament accompany the guy [Sam Rainsy], I will not do anything to them, but they first need a visa to be stamped [on their passports] before entering [Cambodia]. Send us your names! Send us your names! You will facilitate our work. [Cambodian] embassies all over the world, when you see the names of those Members of Parliament, don’t give them the visas! That’s it!”

Breaking news (moving banner): Prime Minister Hun Sen threatens to arrest convict Sam Rainsy and to throw him in jail if he comes to Cambodia. As for those foreigners who would accompany him but have no entry visa, they will not be allowed to enter the country.
