Pre-announced massacre at the Thai-Cambodian border

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in a public speech on 25 March 2019 announced an order to the military to build trenches equipped with machine guns on the Thai-Cambodian border to shoot at the opposition leader Sam Rainsy, should he attempt to cross the border. This creates the possibility of a pre-announced massacre at the Thai-Cambodian border, given the fact that Sam Rainsy would be accompanied by hundreds of domestic and international supporters on arrival in his native Cambodia. A massacre on the Thai-Cambodian border would have grave implications not only for the internal stability of Cambodia, but for regional stability in the ASEAN region, which would drag more countries into the looming domestic crisis.

Sam Rainsy, who has said he intends to return to Cambodia in 2019, must not return by land, Hun Sen said in the commencement speech Monday [25 March 2019].

“You are proud to claim that when you return there will be UN officials or foreign officials coming to escort you,” he said.

“It will be good to see if you dare come by crossing a land border. You should know what we do at the border: We build trenches equipped with machine guns [to repel you],” said Hun Sen.
