(*) Thanks to unprecedented international pressure Hun Sen has given up his plan to dissolve the CNRP. His new strategy now is to use brutal force against individual CNRP leaders to oblige them, one by one, to pledge allegiance to the CPP. Instead of a shocking dissolution of the only parliamentary opposition party Hun Sen now wants to change the CNRP into a docile pro-government party so as to preserve a façade of democracy. But this new strategy will also fail because all the CNRP’s most important leaders are aware of Hun Sen’s new plan and have left – or are leaving – the country. They stress that decisions made under duress by jailed president Kem Sokha are not valid. Under the present circumstances, only CNRP Standing Committee members – more than 2-3 of whom are now abroad – can commit the party.
